Did you know that Sheffield has been a member authority of Mayors for Peace since July 1989 and has a longstanding of history of peacework, which includes the peace march in 1936?
Sheffield was also the target city for a nuclear attack in the 1984 BBC television film ‘Threads’. The film graphically outlines the short term and long term impact on the city’s residents.
With cities and the citizens who live in them being their targets, and the catastrophic consequences on a global scale that could be inflicted by their use, nuclear weapons are the greatest threat to the safety and security of citizens’ lives. Local peace groups (such as Yorkshire CND & Sheffield Creative Action for Peace) are therefore urging local leaders to take concrete action for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
